How to Choose the Right LED Downlights for Your Project?
Choosing LED downlights isn't just about brightness. Learn about beam angles, color temperature, and spacing to find the perfect lighting for your space.
Walk into a room, and you’ll instantly know if the lighting is right. If it’s too dim, it feels gloomy; too harsh, and it feels like an interrogation room. Choosing the right LED downlights is the secret to making a space feel professional, comfortable, and inviting. But with so many options, how do you pick the right one for your project?
At DAYBREAK OPTO-TECHNOLOGY, we help clients pick lighting for everything from retail shops to homes. Here is our simple guide to getting it right the first time.
1. Understand the Beam Angle
The beam angle decides how the light hits the floor or the wall. It’s the difference between a spotlight and a floodlight.
- Narrow beam (15° - 24°): Perfect for highlighting objects. Use these in retail stores to draw attention to products on shelves or art pieces.
- Medium beam (36°): The "all-rounder." Good for general lighting in hallways or living rooms.
- Wide beam (60°+): Best for general illumination in large areas, like offices or open-plan spaces, where you want to wash the floor with light.
2. Choose the Right Color Temperature (CCT)
Color temperature changes the mood of a room. It’s measured in Kelvin (K).
- 3000K (Warm White): Cozy and relaxing. Best for homes, hotels, and restaurants.
- 4000K (Neutral White): Clean and crisp. The standard for offices, retail shops, and commercial spaces. It helps people stay focused.
- 5000K+ (Daylight): Very bright and alert. Useful for warehouses, garages, or areas where you need high visibility for detailed work.
3. Think About Spacing
Don't just jam lights into the ceiling. A common rule of thumb is: Space them about 1 to 1.5 meters apart. If you place them too close, you get "hot spots" (too bright). Too far apart, and you get shadows. If you are unsure, send us your floor plan or room dimensions, and we can calculate the best layout for you.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: How do I know which beam angle I need?
A: It depends on your ceiling height and what you are lighting. High ceilings usually need narrower beams to get enough light to the floor. If it's general home lighting, a wider beam is usually more comfortable.
Q: Can I mix different color temperatures in the same room?
A: We generally advise against it. Stick to one color temperature in a room to keep the design looking consistent and professional.
Q: Do you help with lighting design plans?
A: Yes! If you are working on a commercial project, send us your dimensions or floor plans. We can help you determine the right number of downlights and the best spacing to avoid dark spots.
